— Creating a Better World.

The Brief: Microsoft wanted their annual Christmas holiday-season campaign to be a festive celebration of inclusion and community, wrapped up in a joyous tale of imagination and adventure. As well as embodying the seasons ideals, they wanted the spot to invite viewers to join the community of 3D-Paint – an innovative Microsoft platform that allows users to easily design, create, and share their own 3D characters and worlds, something that was previously quite complex.

The Approach: To achieve this goal - we designed and built a CGI galaxy full of diverse characters inspired by characters in the real 3D-Paint community; all while staying true to the platform’s capabilities. These oddball heroes were intended to look as if they we designed by either a 7-year old or a 70-year old, to represent the broad appeal of the 3D-Paint community.

Each of these unique characters has their own quirks and oddities, but they are all invited to the holiday space-party together - and their diversity and inclusion serves in creating a better world for all.

Bringing everyone in this adventure together with a sense of belonging is Sasha, the young hero of our film – also inspired by real-world illustrator and 3D-Paint user, Sasha Matthews; featured in the end scene.

In completing the film, all of the CGI characters and props were then uploaded to the 3D-Paint platform, for the online community to share, amend and create their own worlds and stories.
